Chalk Pyramids

Monument Rocks and wildflowers

Gove County

Also known as Monument Rocks, these fragile looking chalk formations were formed maybe 80 million years, according to Wikipedia. Though chalk doesn’t erode easily, they do wear down year by year and I was told that one of them collapsed recently.  The sparse rainfall in the area offers some protection. This was the first “National Natural Landmark” chosen by the Department of Interior.

I first visited these about twenty-five years ago (it seemed bigger then) and was really glad to return with Cheryl this year. You’ll find her out and about in one or two of the photos below.

p.s. “Art in the Garden” is this weekend at Toad Hollow. You’ll find dozens of artists in all types of media, and I’ll have some prints available for viewing/sale. It’s an opportunity to see higher quality versions of the stuff you see on the Flyover People, Postcards from Kansas, and Casual Images galleries. Only a small selection are represented, but still, please stop by and visit if you’re in the area. Hopefully you won’t need an umbrella this year.
