Rest Stop on the Journey of the Dead

Diamond Springs
As trade moved along this section of Santa Fe trail, in the early 1800s, conditions became especially severe. Good water was hard to find and attacks by the prairie’s first occupants were common. So dangerous was it that the journey from Diamond Springs south became known as the “journey of the dead.” A generous natural spring nearby gave this location the title “Diamond of the Plain”, and the small town that would rise and fall here was named Diamond Springs. All that marks the spot now are a couple private homes and some stone ruins.
